Large language models (LLMs) are next sequence prediction models designed for generation and representation learning in the domains of natural language processing, computer vision, as well as audio and speech processing. This branch of AI aims to interpret, recognize, and understand text, spoken words, pictures, videos, and audio.
AI chatbot ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer), along with its predecessor GPT-3 and successor GPT-4, calculates a probability distribution to decide what word comes next in any given sentence based on patterns found in training sets equivalent to nearly 10 million books. Therefore, they do not understand words, much less language, and cannot produce new and unusual ideas.
If you decide to introduce AI-generated text into your writing, be aware of the many flaws of generative transformers. They tend to be inconsistent and not particularly informative. When more in-depth information is required, data is reported matter-of-factly, and the truth is often misrepresented (i.e., alleged certainties and half-truths, respectively). Likewise, citations are often missing, fabricated, or misleading. When credible sources are offered, they are added only at the end of a sentence. Quotes from authority figures may not be included; only anonymous authorities are cited, like “investors said.” Mentions of named entities like brands, companies, people, places, dates, numbers, etc., are in short supply.
Because the default voice of ChatGPT, for example, is passive and written in the third-person point-of-view, it sounds distant and hollow. Although its tone is diplomatic and careful, hedging with statements like “I’m just a humble AI model trained by OpenAI, I don’t have personal preferences, opinions, or beliefs,” it still makes sweeping generalizations and causal oversimplifications with an air of confidence.
Unless a detailed prompt is specified, the writing style of generative transformers tends to be generic. They offer simple word choices rather than technical or scientific jargon. Emotive, exaggerated, inflammatory, and pretentious language is absent, along with intense modifiers.
